Erik Ten Hag has been largely satisfied with Antony’s performances, but wants improvements from his star forward

Manchester United gaffer Erik Ten Hag has asked star signing Antony to improve an aspect of his game that will take him to the next level.

Antony joined the Red Devils in the summer for €100 million from Ajax on Ten Hag’s behest, but has flattered to deceive since his big-money move.

Ten Hag wants more from Antony

The Dutch manager and Brazilian forward share a special relationship after working well together at Ajax, which prompted Ten Hag to request for Antony from Manchester United’s board at any cost.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s EFL Cup semifinal first leg against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag said he was satisfied with Antony’s performances so far since the team usually play better and win with him on the pitch.

He also recognised that, although Antony has been good, there is still ample room for improvement.

Ten Hag, speaking to journalists, said, “When he is playing, the team is winning and that already gives a message I think how well he is performing.”

He also said. "He can do better, I see space for improvement and, for instance - and I think you notice - we want him to be more direct, more involved. But the team is performing better if he is on the pitch and that is a good thing, a good base to build further on.”

Antony’s first six months in the Premier League

Ten Hag’s comments mirror the thoughts of many Manchester United fans who believe that Antony’s quality on the ball and skillful disposition should see him beat more defenders with more direct running than what he currently offers.

He has only shown glimpses of what he is capable of, but has largely failed to impact Manchester United the way he was touted to in the summer.

He has scored only three Premier League goals so far and has failed to contribute directly to any other goal in the league.

Antony is yet to create a big chance after 11 league matches

He has not created a big chance in 11 Premier League appearances and in the one department that he was likely to succeed, he has not.

He has averaged less than one dribble per game in the league, and has completed less than half of his attempted dribbles.

There is little wonder why Ten Hag and the United faithful believe that Antony can only get better.
