How it happened
Antoine Kombouaré made a triumphant comeback as Nantes boss, guiding the relegation-threatened Canaries to a stunning 2-1 victory over European chasers Nice at the Allianz Riviera.
With Nice starting the day 11 places above their visitors, expectations were high among the home faithful. However, the galvanizing effect of a new manager quickly became evident as Matthis Abline netted a shock opener for Nantes in the 20th minute, capitalizing on Kelvin Amian’s pinpoint cross.
True to their recent struggles, Nice failed to mount a significant response, despite a more vibrant display in the second half. Nantes' defense remained resolute, frustrating the home side's attacking efforts.
A moment of controversy ensued when Pedro Chirivella was pushed in the neck by Jordan Lotomba, resulting in a heated exchange. Despite calls for harsher punishment, both players received yellow cards, setting the stage for further drama.
Nice were awarded a penalty after a VAR review, which Terem Moffi converted to level the score. However, Nantes wasted no time in regaining their lead, with Mostafa Mohamed calmly slotting home from the spot.
Despite enduring eight minutes of injury time, Nantes held firm to secure a crucial victory, much to the delight of their supporters. With a two-point cushion above the relegation zone, Kombouaré's side can breathe a sigh of relief.
Nantes' win sees them extend their unbeaten record against Nice, while the home side's struggles continue with just one win in their last seven games across all competitions.
