The Ayenugbas: Meet Father and Son who are rivals in Nigerian Football

Any father-and-son rivalry in the annals of Nigerian football would require a thorough investigation of the archives. The Aiyenugbas accomplished that when they lined up for their clubs (Kwara United and Beyond Limits) at the just concluded Valuejet Pre-season competition in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Dele Ayenugba and his son Daniel Ayenugba clashed in an epic match when both parties played between the sticks for their respective clubs.

Although there have been football dynasties in Nigeria, it is uncommon to see father and son playing together, let alone competing against one another.

Who is Dele Aiyenugba?

Dele Aiyenugba is a former Super Eagles goalkeeper who currently plies his trade with his hometown club, Kwara United.

During his career he won the CAF Champions League titles back-to-back with Enyimba in 2003 and 2004, before he traveled to Europe to play for some of Israel's top clubs.

Daniel Ayenugba

Daniel Aiyenugba, on the other hand came into the spotlight in 2021 at the age of 12 after he had an impressive outing, winning the Ramat Cup Competition in Kano.

The 14-year-old goalkeeper is currently with Remo Stars Academy, Beyond Limits in Ikenne.

History was made at the Valuejet Pre-season as Father and Son (The Ayenugbas) faced each other on the pitch, becoming the first to do that, although Nigeria has witnessed different brothers playing against each other.

The Ayenugbas captained their sides in the semifinals of the competition that ended 2-2 in regulation time, with both goalkeepers saving a penalty each in the match-deciding shootout.

Playing against my son is a dream come through - Dele Ayenugba

Speaking after the game, the Egypt 2006 African Cup of Nations bronze medalist claimed that it was a dream come true for him to play against his son.

“I am a proud father because I have watched him do great things even at this young age and it was a dream come true seeing him on the same pitch with me in a tournament of this magnitude.

“It seems as if I have won a jackpot because it is not every time you see something like this happening. Playing against my son, who is also his team’s captain, made me grateful to God.

On his part, Daniel showered his father with accolades. He said his dad is responsible for his rapid growth in the round leather game.

The young goalkeeper's dream is to one day play for some of Europe's big clubs and represent Nigeria on the international scene.

He said, “I also watch a lot of video clips of my dad, even up till now. Any time he comes home during his offseason, he does his goalkeeping training on the same pitch as my brother and me.

“I hope to one day play for big clubs and the national team like my father."
