St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) defeated Kiira College Butiki 2-1 at the Muteesa II stadium in Wankulukuku to win the maiden competition.

The inaugural edition of the FUFA TV Cup was a success, according to the competition ambassador Hassan Wasswa.

St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) defeated Kiira College Butiki 2-1 at the Muteesa II stadium in Wankulukuku to win the maiden competition.

“It was a nice experience, that’s for sure; the players enjoyed themselves, especially because they have been together for a while,” the former Uganda Cranes defender told Pulse Sports.

“I think the next expanded tourney will be more exciting because it will accommodate more traditional schools, especially those that rarely compete in the USA competition because we’re missing out on more talent,” Wasswa added.

The creation of the FUFA TV Cup received a lot of criticism, with many questioning its motive.

Wasswa added: “It’s two different competitions; the usual USSSA attracts schools that take football seriously, to the extent of bringing in mercenaries just to win, which is not the case with the FUFA TV Cup schools.”

“The FUFA TV Cup gives a chance to schools that concentrate on studies more to showcase talent; imagine if Kitende, St Juliana High School, or Kibuli featured in the FUFA TV Cup, they’d dominate everything.”

FUFA president Moses Magogo explained that the competition was created to give opportunities to football players, referees and coaches at traditional secondary schools more known for academic excellence.

“As a federation, our vision is to be the number one footballing nation in Africa on and off the pitch, and we can achieve this by developing, promoting and protecting the game,” Magogo said.

“We believe we can achieve this by collaborating with schools because they have the students, nice pitches, and teachers, among others,” Magogo added.

The competition, launched in May, saw eight traditional schools feature in the first edition, but it’s expected to expand to 16 teams in the second edition.

Ernest Olukol was named the tournament MVP while schoolmate Gift Fred Mutalya who bagged eight goals, walked away with the top scorer’s award.

SMACK’s Aine Darren scooped the golden glove award as the champions also received a cheque of Ugx 3M, while Mengo SS received the fair play award of the competition.
