Has Victor Osimhen been handed a Champions League qualification lifeline?
Osimhen’s club side were in danger of realistically losing every chance of making next year’s competition, but Monday’s events have given Napoli a fighting chance.
Struggles in Germany and Resurgence at Charleroi
Osimhen secured a move to the Bundesliga club Wolfsburg following his impressive performance at the 2015 Under-17 World Cup, in which he won the Golden Boot.
However, he could not match the high expectations that came with his transfer, as his time in Germany proved challenging as he struggled to secure regular first-team action, raising doubts about his future in football.
He eventually left Wolfsburg for Royal Charleroi in the Belgian top flight, a move he regards as the turning point in his career.
Reflecting on this crucial period in his career, the 25-year-old striker emphasised the significance of his time at Charleroi. Osimhen said, “Yes, I remember the key moment is when I signed for Charleroi in Belgium."
“I highlight this transfer because before when I moved to Wolfsburg, I really wanted to start playing obviously, but I also wanted to learn because I moved as a young striker and I needed time to transform into the player and man I wanted to become.
“At that time, I was able to play with great players like Draxler, Schurrle, Guilavogui, Mario Gomez also came, for me it was an opportunity to learn a thing or two from some of the greatest strikers of that period and so for me it was really a turning point for my career, even if things didn’t go so well."
The Launchpad for Success
Osimhen continued, “I then moved to Belgium to try and get more playing time but was rejected by two clubs there before Charleroi finally offered me a contract. That was truly a key moment, the moment that made me the Victor Osimhen you see now, those people gave me the opportunity to write my story, to launch my career from the bottom. That was the moment I realized I would make it big in football.”
Osimhen is right in viewing that moment as the key turning point in his career, as his 20 goals in 38 games for the Belgian outfit, earned him a move to a club in the big five European leagues, Lille in Ligue 1.
With the increased visibility, he attracted the attention of Napoli, his current club, where he made history, and earned himself the most coveted individual award on the continent, the CAF Men’s Footballer of the Year Award.
