Onyego has missed each of Bristol City's last three Championship games
Bristol City's Zak Onyego Vyner, a prospect for Kenya's national team Harambee Stars, has been notably absent from the team's last three Championship games, sparking concerns among fans.
Vyner, who earned the title of Robins' player of the year, has been a crucial component of the team's defense this season, featuring in 35 games and maintaining an impressive average SofaScore rating of 6.97.
However, his absence from recent matches against Huddersfield, Norwich City, and Rotherham has left supporters questioning the reasons behind his non-involvement.
It has now been revealed that the 26-year-old defender, born to a Kenyan father and an English mother, is recuperating from a knee injury sustained during Bristol City's 5-0 victory over Blackburn.
Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, manager Manning provided insight into Vyner's condition, stating, "Unfortunately, Zak took a bit of a knock to his knee the other night in the game, nothing serious or major but enough to keep him out. Frustrating but it is what it is."
Manning further elaborated on Vyner's efforts to return to fitness, mentioning, "Zak went on the grass to test it (after the Blackburn game) to try it and see if he could be available and pushed to do it but he had a little bit of reaction."
With Vyner sidelined, Bristol City's coaching staff faced the challenge of reshuffling their defensive lineup. Manning highlighted the adaptability of the squad, expressing confidence in the players stepping up to fill the void.
He said, "Four senior centre backs missing which isn’t ideal, but I think it’s one of those… I’m able to step back and you look at Haydon, he’s played in that position numerous times and they’re footballers."
Manning praised the performances of other defenders like George and Ross, emphasizing the team's cohesion and communication on the field.
Vyner's absence from recent matches adds to his injury woes this season, having previously missed games due to a knee injury sustained in September.
It remains to be seen whether Vyner will be available for the rest of the season.
