Athletic Club's famous brothers, Inaki and Nico Williams, have come a long way in their football journey
The Williams brothers' journey to success began amidst adversity. Their parents, Felix and Maria, embarked on a perilous journey from Ghana to Spain in search of a better life.
Inaki's early experiences, from refereeing matches to supporting his family, forged his character and instilled in him a relentless work ethic. The older Williams brother reflects on their journey, stating, "We had to suffer a lot... But thanks to God, we are all here together now, living a really good life."
From humble beginnings to sporting stardom and historical feats
However, even as Inaki Williams, rose to become a prominent figure in Bilbao's football scene, he always recognised the spark of talent within his younger brother, Nico, whom he knew would become great, perhaps even greater than himself.
Despite Nico's initial nervousness on the field, Inaki served as both a mentor and guardian, nurturing his sibling's potential. Reflecting on their journey, Inaki states, "As an older brother, it makes me really proud to see how he has grown, to see how he is improving as a footballer. He has no ceiling."
Inaki's breakthrough as the first black player to establish himself at San Mames symbolizes a broader shift towards inclusivity in Basque football. Their success paved the way for other children of immigrants to break into the predominantly white landscape of Basque football. Gaizka Garitano, a former Athletic head coach, highlights the brothers' impact, stating, "Their mother was key for their improvement. Not only in football but also in the way they are, the respect of everybody."
A symbol of belonging in Basque society
Athletic Bilbao holds a special place in the hearts of Basque residents, serving as a symbol of identity and pride. The club's commitment to its Basque roots fosters a sense of belonging and unity among its diverse fan base. Ander Herrera, a former Athletic player, remarks, "In Bilbao, you find people who have been season ticket holders all their lives and they don't watch other games; they only watch Athletic."
Athletic Bilbao's embrace of diversity extends beyond the football pitch, reflecting the evolving landscape of Basque society. The club's youth system nurtures talent from immigrant families, enriching the fabric of Basque football with new perspectives and experiences. Mikel Gonzalez, Athletic's sporting director, emphasizes the importance of Inaki's guidance for Nico, stating, "Inaki is the best example of hard work."
A dream come true for Williams brothers
In the aftermath of Athletic Bilbao's thrilling victory in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday night, Inaki Williams and Nico Williams were captured sharing a deeply emotional embrace. The Spanish side, after a 40-year drought, clinched the title by triumphing over Mallorca in a tense penalty shootout at the Estadio Olímpico de Sevilla.
Both brothers played pivotal roles in the match, with Nico contributing an assist for Bilbao's solitary goal before witnessing the decisive moments of the shootout alongside his sibling.
Following the final whistle, the pair was visibly overwhelmed by emotion, and cameras captured the poignant scene as they embraced on the pitch. A video clip circulating on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, showed the brothers appearing to shed tears as they hugged each other in the wake of the exhilarating 4-3 shootout victory.
