Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy explains why Kenyan fans will be an asset for the Stars after an unbelievable support against Gabon.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has lauded the Kenyan fans for filling the Nyayo Stadium to the raptors in a show of solidarity.

The 30,000-seater capacity Nyayo Stadium was, for the first time in a decade, full as Harambee Stars hosted Gabon on Sunday in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Although Kenya lost the crucial clash 2-1, McCarthy was impressed with the way the fans pushed the team to the end. Thousands of fans showed up at the drama-filled Nyayo Stadium, an occurrence that the South African said he has never witnessed before, despite spending his time in Europe.

"This was massive, and this is what Africa as a continent should be. It was simply beautiful," McCarthy told Mozzart Sports.

The former Manchester United assistant coach maintained that the experience remains his best ever. "We are grateful for the support the people of Kenya gave us by coming out in numbers to cheer the team. Wow, this was the most memorable experience even in my career in Europe, I never witnessed something like this."

Former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed the headlines with his brace, denting the Stars' World Cup qualification hopes but McCarthy was bullish about Kenya's chances.

Aubameyang, who also played for Chelsea, scored in either half, the second from the penalty spot and despite Kenya’s efforts to find their way back after striker Michael Olunga had reduced the deficit, the Panthers held on to register their fifth win of the qualification campaign and stayed on course to earn the qualification berth.

Harambee Stars still stand a mathematical chance depending on other teams to do justice for them. If the Stars win their remaining four matches and hope that Gabon lose all their remaining fixtures, then the Stars can qualify.

Harambee Stars will wait until September 1, to host Gambia at Nyayo Stadium. In the first meeting, they drew 3-3. After Gambia, Kenya will host Seychelles at the same venue on September 8th. During the first meeting, Harambee Stars hammered the Islanders 5-0.
