Uganda Cranes legend Tonny Mawejje is enjoying his first-ever experience as a coach after calling it quits as a player over a year back.

His first role was at Kampala Queens FC as the deputy to head coach Charles Ssenyange Nsanziro.

And, in his maiden experience, Mawejje and the team were tasked to lead the team to the CAF Women's Champions League, only to fall at the group stages of the Zonal Qualifiers.

"It was a very important step in my career as a coach doing everything for the first time, I was really," Mawejje told Kampala Queens media.

The team won twice, lost and managed a stalemate once apiece, but all were part of the learning curve for Mawejje and the team.

"I'm my first game. We won, and nothing can beat a win, especially in such a big tournament; together with the entire technical team, we were so happy."

"It wasn't easy because we were playing against champions from elsewhere, so they are here to defend a name."

"So when we lost the game, I was really disappointed as a coach because we came into the tournament to win, but you have to lift the team, forget the past and move forward."

Mawejje added: "The players are ready and always have that urge to always make it there, but sometimes it calls for a different mindset, one of real champions."

"As someone who needs to be a champion, you have to be up to it, have to want it more than the rest and have that burning desire to be champion, and once we have that, it will be easier."

"I want to tell everyone that the experience we have in this tournament is going to be so important for the players and the coaches," Mawejje noted.

Kampala Queens garnered seven points after winning against Yei Joint Stars and FAD FC, a draw against CBE FC and a defeat to Buja Queens.
