Injuries are an inherent part of sports, and an athlete’s response often determines their path to recovery.

For Simon Ssemayange, 2022 brought mixed emotions. He secured a contract with Soltilo Bright Stars and was part of Uganda Hippos’ CECAFA Championship-winning squad in Sudan.

However, his fortunes took a drastic turn when he suffered a seemingly minor knee injury in December, which later proved to be significant.

“My life has been challenging since the knee injury. Initially, I didn’t take it seriously, but after worsening symptoms, an MRI revealed a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury and meniscus damage,” Ssemayange shared with Pulse Sports.

Seeking medical assistance, the 20-year-old left full-back reached out to St. Catherine Hospital, FUFA’s medical insurance partner.

Unfortunately, logistical delays have hindered the procedure, prompting the launch of a fundraiser to gather Ugx 13 million for surgery at Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (Corsu).

“While I’ve waited patiently for FUFA’s clearance, the insurance payment delay has kept me sidelined for too long. I want to resolve this,” Ssemayange emphasized.

“With advice from friends, I’ve decided to start a drive to raise Ugx 13M, and I appeal to anyone who can assist to please contribute.”

Pulse Sports contacted Soltilo Bright Stars, who expressed their commitment to supporting Ssemayange as a former player.

“Ssemayange is a talented and dedicated lad, our former player. His current situation saddens us, and we promise to help in any way we can,” said Harold Atukwatse, the club’s General Manager.

“We understand the surgery delay due to FUFA insurance issues, but we’re confident it will be resolved. We stand with Simon during these tough times.”

Ssemayange joined the Kavumba-based side in 2020, making a notable impact with three goals in as many games and earning three man-of-the-match awards.

He also played a crucial role in Uganda Hippos’ CECAFA U-20 victory in Sudan. Contributions can be made via Mobile Money to Sebunya Hakim at 0772838601/0700507521.
