Tottenham ended Manchester City's chances of winning the EFL Cup after dumping them out in the third round.

A first-half double from Tottenham was enough, as they defeated Manchester City 2-1 to book a spot in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Ange Postecoglou names a strong 11, as he is determined to maintain his trend of winning trophies in his second season at new clubs. Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, fielded a heavily rotated side, and it was evident as Spurs capitalised to beat them to one of eight tickets to the next round.

Key match details

Tottenham burst into the lead just six minutes in. Brennan Johnson found Dejan Kulusevski in space with a beautifully weighted ball. The Swede's low cross found Timo Werner, who emphatically powered past Stefan Ortega.

By the midpoint of the first half, Tottenham scored another thanks to an intelligent corner routine. Kulusevski picked out Pape Matar Sarr on the edge of the box, and the midfielder expertly curled his strike inside the near post.

Tottenham looked set to run away with it, however, in first-half stoppage time, City grasped a vital lifeline. Savinho skilfully evaded Destiny Udogie and lofted a precise cross for Nunes to convert at the far post.

After the break, Tottenham should have extended their advantage. Dominic Solanke shrugged off two defenders and released Werner, but his heavy touch and weak-footed strike whizzed past the far post.

The second half was a scoreless affair, but not for a lack of trying. Both teams fashioned decent chances but were let down by poor finishing. Manchester City came close to repeating their first-half feat by scoring late in the half, but a heroic intervention from Yves Bissouma ensured Tottenham sealed their quarterfinal spot.
