Liverpool claims a vital victory against Tottenham at Anfield as they move into fifth position and eight points behind Manchester United in fourth position.

Tottenham were looking to build from their inspirational comeback against Manchester United during the week but were shocked by Liverpool at Anfield as they lost 4-3 with The Reds overtaking them in fifth position.

Three first-half goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah subdued Tottenham as they got overwhelmed by Liverpool at Anfield. However, they got a goal towards the end of the first half with a good strike from Harry Kane. Tottenham tried to come back in the second half but Liverpool were too good for them.

Heung-min Son scored the second goal for Tottenham in the second half and Richarlison who came in as a substitute scored the equaliser for Spurs but Liverpool got the winner with an injury-time goal from Diogo Jota

As it happened

Jurgen Klopp made three changes to his team that defeated West Ham during the week with Diaz, Elliot and Konate returning to the starting lineup. Tottenham's interim coach made two changes to his side that drew to Manchester United with Kulusevski and Davis starting.

It did not take long for Liverpool to open the scoring in the 3rd minute of the game as Curtis Jones scored with a brilliant low shot into the middle of the goal after being released inside the box by a superb lofted pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The home side added the second goal two minutes after as Cody Gakpo teed up Luis Diaz inside the box and he curls the ball into the right side of the net and past Fraser Forster.

Liverpool were looking like a team that would go rampage against Tottenham as they added the third goal of the game. Paul Tierney blew his whistle and signalled a foul after Cristian Gabriel Romero brought his opponent down in the box. Mohamed Salah steps up to take the Penalty and sends an unstoppable ball past Fraser Forster into the roof of the net.

Tottenham tried to get back into the game at the end of the first half and got a goal for themselves in the 39th minute when Ivan Perisic put a cross into the box and found Harry Kane, who latches on to it and strikes the ball low into the middle of the net.

The second half saw Tottenham try to salvage a comeback as they did against Manchester United but could only get a goal in the 77th minute when Heung-Min Son latches onto a cross just outside the penalty area and unleashes a low drive that goes into the middle of the goal with the goalkeeper failing to keep it out.

The away side then completed the come-back in the 93rd minute when Heung-Min Son curled a free kick into the box. Richarlison peels off his marker and arrows a brilliant header past Alisson and into the top right corner.

Tottenham thought they had rescued a point at Anfield but were shocked in the 94th minute when Diogo Jota pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the bottom right corner, winning the game for Liverpool

The loss leaves Tottenham in sixth position as Liverpool leapfrogs them into fifth position as the race for a Champions League spot fades away.
