Paul Onuachu's exit from Trabzonspor could pave the way for an ex-Manchester United striker to enter the Turkish club
Turkish side Trabzonspor are hoping to replace outgoing Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu with former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst this summer.
The club has been relying on Onuachu, who was on loan from Southampton. However, Southampton's preference for a sale rather than another loan deal has complicated Trabzonspor's plans to retain the Nigerian forward. As a result, the club is now exploring alternatives to bolster their strike force for the next term.
Trabzonspor interested in Weghorst
One potential solution for Trabzonspor is Burnley striker Wout Weghorst. The Dutch forward, who had a brief stint with Manchester United, is reportedly on Trabzonspor's radar.
According to Turkish daily Fanatik, Trabzonspor have intensified their efforts to secure Weghorst's services.
The club has accelerated contacts with Burnley to gauge the feasibility of bringing the experienced striker to Turkey.
Weghorst's Turkish experience
Weghorst is not a stranger to Turkish football, having had a successful six-month loan spell with Besiktas during the 2022/23 season. During his time with the Istanbul-based club, Weghorst impressed with his performances, scoring nine goals in 18 appearances.
This experience in the Turkish league makes him a particularly attractive option for Trabzonspor, who are keen on adding his talent and experience to their squad. The club hopes that Weghorst's familiarity with the Turkish football environment will help him make an immediate impact.
