The coach noted that the sluggish start forced them into making mistakes, which left them with ‘a huge mountain to climb’.

Tusker FC assistant coach George Maina has lambasted his charges’ slow start during the 2-1 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz in an FKFPL match played at the Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday.

Homeboyz went ahead after just three minutes when Ambrose Sifuna scored the opening goal before Moses Shummah made it 2-0 in the 18th minute.

Eric Zakayo pulled one back for Tusker in the 71st minute but it was not enough as the Brewers succumbed to a loss.

Asked to step in for Robert Matano, Maina insisted that the sluggish start forced them into making mistakes, which left them with ‘a huge mountain to climb’.

“We did not start well. First half we made mistakes which cost us goals, leaving us with a huge mountain to climb,” Maina said after the match.

The former Naivas FC head coach was encouraged by what he saw at the beginning of the second half but praised Homeboyz tactical setup in the loss as the Abana Abeingo effectively made life difficult for the Brewers to bounce back.

“In the second half, my boys did well. Our instructions worked to the tee and we tried to push, but okay, maybe the Homeboyz tactics were better than ours but that is football at the end of the day.”

The loss now means Tusker have collected just four points from their opening three games of the season, which may be an early dent in their title aspirations, although the league is still very young.

Tusker will host Muhoroni Youth at the Ruaraka Grounds on Satruday 23 September.
