Tusker FC recorded a slim win against AFC Leopards to end Ingwe’s unbeaten run in 2024 while moving to second place, seven points behind leaders Gor Mahia.

AFC Leopards suffered their first defeat in 10 games when they lost 1-0 to Tusker FC in an FKF Premier League contest at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.

In a game where chances were few and far between, Tusker capitalised on a defensive mix-up in the Leopards box to take a 34th-minute lead which they held on to claim all three points which sees them return to second place on the table and now seven points behind leaders Gor Mahia.

Mike Oduor delivered a low corner from the left after which John Njuguna made a dummy which deceived Randy Bakari and Arthur Gitego at the near post. Bakari then deflected the ball into his own net to hand Tusker the lead.

Leopards would have responded almost instantly when Hassan Beja made a good run on the left before floating in a delicious cross but Gitego failed to connect well after making a good run on goal.

The Rwandan forward saw his header go just wide when he should have found the target as Tusker went into the breaking leading 1-0.

After the break, Leopards kept pushing and came close again in the 57th minute when Gitego sent through a good effort on the half turn that needed a fingertip save from Tusker goalkeeper Brian Opondo.

Tusker’s decision to keep track of Leopards’ dangerman Beja paid dividends as Ingwe lacked threat throughout the contest with their forwards not getting proper service.

The Brewers then came close to doubling their lead 10 minutes from time when Collins Otieno drew a good save from Leopards custodian Levis Opiyo.

Robert Matano’s men then held firm to claim maximum points, ending Leopards’ unbeaten run in 2024 and it was also the first time Ingwe had conceded a goal since the turn of the year.

Victory leaves Tusker second on the table with 43 points while Leopards are eighth, nine behind, heading into the international break.
