Robert Matano’s coaching journey began in 1986 at Pumwani Sportif, marking the start of a prolific period that would see him helm several top-flight clubs, including World Hope (Nairobi City Stars), Sofapaka, AFC Leopards, Ulinzi Stars, and Tusker FC over two stints.
His strategic mindset and leadership have made him a respected figure in Kenyan football culminating in numerous accolades, such as being named the coach of the month in June 2021 and earning the coach of the year award at the close of the 2020/21 season.

The nickname 'Lion' was born out of a particularly turbulent time during his tenure at Sofapaka a club he led to an extraordinary league win in 2009 during their debut season in the league.
"The name originated when I was leaving Sofapaka under challenging circumstances. There was significant backbiting within the team, and I told them I am a Lion, not a Hyena," Matano revealed in an interview with Buzz Sports.
Matano's comparison to a lion rather than a hyena symbolizes his approach to both leadership and life—predatory and determined, never scavenging or settling for leftovers.
"Any coach who succeeds me and wins all the trophies I secured with the team might be considered better than me, especially if he wins the CAF Champions League or the Club World Cup. I always hunt and achieve whatever I set my mind to," he added.
