After the win over the Slum Boys, the Brewers will next face the ambitious Kenya Police.

Tusker FC have boosted their odds of defending the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title with a 2-0 win over Mathare United.

The reigning champions were unable to find a way past Mathare in the first half but emerged the winners after a more determined performance in the subsequent half.

Meanwhile, Charles Momanyi almost claimed an early opener in the fourth minute, but his header, from a free-kick delivered by Humphrey Mieno, went out.

A build-up that involved Mieno, John Njuguna, and Eric Otieno almost led to an opener, but the latter was stopped by a raised offside flag in the 10th minute. Otieno was again denied a scoring opportunity in the 17th minute when he was adjudged to be in an offside position.

Mathare’s first notable chance was witnessed in the 22nd minute after Curtis Wekesa made his way into the dangerous area from the left flank. However, Brian Bwire – in Tusker’s goal – managed to end the siege with a fine save.

Tusker were more determined and kept attacking the Slum Boys, but were unable to find the back of the net despite a number of chances. In the 40th minute, Njuguna maneuvered past a number of opponents and released the marauding Daniel Sakari, who in turn laid the ball on the path of Shaphan Oyugi.

Oyugi’s shot, however, went wide as Tusker rued another wasted chance after a nice team play.

Breakthrough

After surviving a scare in the 56th minute, Tusker regrouped and schemed for an opener. It came in the 61st minute when Rodgers Ouma – after Mieno set him through on goal - volleyed the ball into Mathare’s net.

After breaking the deadlock, coach Robert Matano made three changes; Njuguna, Ouma, and Oyugi were replaced by Lawrence Luvanda, Jackson Macharia, and Stewart Omondi.

Omondi’s introduction was immediately felt as he provided an assist for Tusker’s second goal in the 67th minute. The second-half substitute swung a nice ball to Ouma, who extended the Brewers’ lead with another fine volley.

As they struggled to contain the away side, Mathare made two changes as Fuad Noor and Baron Oketch came on for Khalid Jumaan and Douglas Kibet in the 71st minute.

Matano’s further changes saw Mieno and new signing Mike Oduor withdrawn, and their places filled by Eric Zakayo and David Odoyo.

In reaction, the 2008 champions withdrew Wekesa and Ronald Sichenje, while Chris Owino and Francis Baraza were thrown into action.

A combination between Zakayo and Omondi could have easily resulted in a third goal, but the latter’s effort went slightly over the bar in the 89th minute.

The win is a big boost for Tusker, who hope to keep pace and eventually race past Gor Mahia to retain the title, while the loss is a big blow to Mathare, who are seeking to avoid a relegation dogfight.
