FOOTBALL Tusker set to part ways with Matano

Despite a spirited campaign that saw them fight on two fronts until the end, the club finished the season without a trophy.

Football Kenya Premier League heavyweights Tusker are set to part ways with head coach Robert Matano.

Reports are rife that the Ruaraka club will not continue with the experienced tactician after they finished the season without a trophy.

Tusker had a chance to end the 2022/23 season with two trophies: the Premier League and the FKF Cup, but ended up losing both. Gor Mahia gave them a run for their money and snatched the league title on the final day of the season.

Matano had led Tusker to two consecutive titles and was on the verge of the third one, but a resurgent and determined Gor Mahia ensured that was not going to happen.

Matano saw his side fall to a 1-0 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz in the cup final at Moi International Sports Centre, and the loss was expected to put his position under scrutiny.

After the Premier League loss and the defeat by Kakamega Homeboyz, it means Tusker will not have a chance to play in CAF football for the 2023/24 season.

Initially, Matano was linked with a move to Bandari, but the Mombasa club is now heavily leaning towards appointing Twahir Muhiddin as permanent head coach.

Muhiddin has been serving on an acting contract since Anthony Kimani parted ways with the club and stated he was not interested in a permanent job. But recent reports claim he is in prime position to assume the role ahead of the new campaign.

Apart from Matano, Francis Kimanzi and AFC Leopards' Patrick Aussems were also linked with Bandari.
