Mandela, who was chairman the last time Villa lifted the title has backed the club's young side to make a title charge next season.
SC Villa President Hajji Omar Mandela insists that he expects the Jogoo to be in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League title race next season, despite missing out on the crown this season.
Villa was within 90 minutes of ending a 19-year wait for the league crown, but suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to URA FC on the final day, which saw rivals Vipers Sc clinch the title.
Not many expected Jackson Magera’s side to challenge for the title at the start of the season. However, they pushed heavy favourites Vipers SC and KCCA FC to the limits, surprising many.
Mandela, who was chairman the last time Villa lifted the title has backed his young side to make a title charge next season.
He reckons the confidence and experience gained from this season, will be crucial for the club going into next term.
“We can do this again next season,” Mandela told Pulse Sports, adding; “We have shown that we can compete, so why shouldn’t we be able to do it again next season?”
“As a club, we have picked up many lessons, and now have much confidence especially gained by the younger players, and I think we can build on that.”
Villa was top of the standings going into the final matchday, holding a two-point advantage over their rivals, but they spectacularly faltered with Najib Fesali heading URA to victory.
The Jogoo had their fair share of chances, with Ivan Sserubiri denied by a strong block from Fesali, while captain Gift Ali headed over the cross bar from close range.
