The Futsal Association Uganda (FAU) is set to hold their inaugural grassroots futsal tournament with U14 girls and boys kicking off on May 16th, 2023.

The tournament aims to create a formidable national team that will compete at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. In a bid to achieve this, the association reached out to several academies to compete in this tournament.

According to the association chairman, Hamza Jjunju, the creation of these competitions will improve not only the development of the game in the country but also the quality of players coming through the system.

"This tournament is just the beginning of a plan to promote the game at the youth level, which will subsequently provide a supply chain of talent for the league and national team in the long run," Jjunju told Pulse Sports.

He also revealed that introducing these competitions is not a one-off event but a stepping stone to introducing more competitions and further spreading the game countrywide.

"Apart from the Futsal Super League (FSL) and Futsal Uganda Cup (FUC), several other competitions have been introduced by FAU.” “This will include U14 Futsal Championship, Primary School Futsal, Secondary School Futsal Championship, and Legends Futsal Cup," Jjunju added.

The U14 Championship will be played across three windows, with the first starting on May 16th. Each team will play nine games in the first window, with 27 matches played across three windows.

This tournament is a significant milestone in the development of futsal in Uganda. It is an opportunity to identify and nurture young talent in the country.

With the introduction of more competitions at the grassroots level, the future of futsal in Uganda looks bright, and it's clear that the FAU is committed to promoting the game at the youth level and beyond.
