UEFA have announced plans for the Euros, Nations League, and qualifiers
European football’s governing body UEFA agave announced that they will keep the number of teams participating in the UEFA European Championships at 24 teams, scrapping plans of an extension to 32 teams.
UEFA backtrack on plans to expand the Euros format
It was believed that UEFA were planning to increase the number of participating teams starting from the 2024 Euros, set to be hosted in Germany, but now that decision has been reversed and will see the Euros maintain the same format it has taken on since the 2016 edition.
Plans to increase the number of participating teams at the Euros had come under intense criticism and UEFA have bowed to the pressure to leave the format of the competition as it is.
UEFA announce changes to other competition formats
UEFA also announced an extension of the UEFA Nations League that will see one two-legged tie between the group stages and final stages.
The knockout round will see the top two in Group A face off as well as the third place team in Group A playing against the runners-up in Group B and the third place team in Group B taking on the runners-up in Group C.
In the final change to competition formats, UEFA also announced a new model for World Cup and Euros qualification that they believe will make the qualifiers for these tournaments less predictable and give some minnows a chance to qualify.
The new format will see 12 groups of four or five teams competing for top spot and automatic qualification.
All changes to European formats will take effect from September 2024, after the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
