Uganda goes top of the table with nine points, the same as Tanzania but enjoys a better goal difference.

Uganda Women’s team pounded Burundi 7-0 to grab the lead from Tanzania in the 2023 CECAFA Women’s Under-18 championship going on in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Uganda exhibited dominance from the onset, taking only five minutes before breaking Burundi’s defence.

Agnes Nabukenya headed Ayub Khalifa’s side into the victory after meeting a sumptuous corner by Sharifa Nakimera.

The Burundians had a chance through a long-range shot in the 31st minute, which Sharon Kaidu easily thwarted in Uganda’s goal.

Uganda retaliated immediately through Kamiyat Naigaga, who paced through to pounce on a failed clearance in Burundi’s half.

Burundi’s centre-back Emelyene Irankunda had failed to clear a long ball from Krusum Namutebi.

Coach Ayub Khalifa made some adjustments after the break, slotting in Uganda Matyrys striker Shamusa Najjuma and Allen Nassazi into his attack.

His change paid off immediately after kickoff as Naigaga completed a beautiful team goal to stretch the lead.

The goal silenced the home fans who had garnered support for the Burundians to tame Uganda’s attack to maintain Tanzania’s superior goal difference.

Phiona Nabulime powered in the fifth in the 53rd minute before substitute Nassazi and Najjuma added two quick ones in the 61st minute.

The Burindians had an opportunity to wipe their tears with a late consolation, but their striker Rukia Bizimana wasted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

Uganda now needs to avoid a defeat against Tanzania to win because of their healthy goal account.
