Bernard Mwalala has hopes that his Ulinzi side can sneak into the top three.

Ulinzi Stars head coach Bernard Mwalala believes his side can still achieve a podium finish in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) despite sitting 14 points behind third-placed Nzoia Sugar.

Mwalala watched his side beat AFC Leopards 1-0 courtesy of Boniface Muchiri’s stunner on Wednesday to make it back-to-back wins in the league and move to sixth position on the log on 43 points.

With six matches remaining before the season concludes, the former Bandari head coach still believes its possible for his side to sneak into the top three even if that appears unrealistic given Nzoia, who occupy third place have 57 points, are fighting for the title alongside Gor Mahia and Tusker FC.

“Our main aim is to win all our remaining games to see if we can get top three or top four which will be a plus for us and we have the semi-final of Mozzart Bet Cup. If we can win it, then this season we would have achieved something,” Mwalala said.

To win all their matches will, however, be a tall order for the Soldiers who have struggled for consistency this season with their longest positive spell being a three-match winning run in January.

Since then, they have only won back-to-back matches twice with so many draws derailing their momentum which is hardly the form they need if they have to finish in the top three of four.

Their display against Leopards also suggested that they still need more as they created but failed to finish off their chances before Muchiri’s strike saved the day.

Mwalala’s other desire is to win the FKF Cup which will present his side with an opportunity to play the CAF Confederation Cup but they have a tough semi-final against Tusker FC on Saturday, May 20.

The silver lining for Mwalala and Ulinzi is that they are on course to surpassing last season’s achievements, having already accumulated the 43 points that they managed in 2021-22, when they finished in a disappointing 13th position.
