Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has revealed why he failed to shake members of the Arsenal coaching staff after the victory at Villa Park.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has explained the reason behind his puzzling decision to not shake the hands of the opposing bench, as is tradition, after the win against Arsenal.

The Basque tactician previously sat on the Arsenal bench for 18 months before he was fired, following a bad run of results; hence, it surprised many and even sparked speculations of a fractured relationship when the former PSG boss failed to courtesy after the match.

Emery explains himself

Unai led Aston Villa to their 15th straight home victory when John McGinn’s first-half strike was enough to earn a 1-0 victory against Arsenal.

Following the final whistle, Emery went straight into a celebration mood without shaking the hands of members of the Arsenal bench, and when asked about it, he explained that it was because Arteta was not in the dugout.

"No, because Arteta wasn't on the bench,” Emery explained.

“I gave my hand to the workers inside because they were there when I was there, but only with the people I coached with and who worked with me.

"There was nothing personal. It was because it wasn't Arteta. I respect a lot Arsenal and Arteta. I respect a lot the workers there. I have nothing negative against them."

Arteta had to watch the game from the director’s box, as he was serving a suspension accumulating yellow cards. He will be back in the manager’s seat when Arsenal host Brighton in the Premier League next weekend.
