United are also in the market for a number two should Dean Henderson leave and De Gea fails to sign a new contract. United made contact with Feyenoord over Justin Bijlow but the Dutch champions are very reluctant sellers.

Manchester United are continuing negotiations with Inter Milan for Andre Onana but a potential deal is expected to be several days away.

Head coach Erik ten Hag would like Onana signed in time for United’s tour of the U.S, with the team set to fly out on July 19, and all parties hope an agreement will be struck in time.

However, there is still a gap in valuations between the clubs that is predicted to require multiple rounds of talks to work through.

The Red Devils made an opening offer for Onana worth up to €45million (£38.6m) earlier this week, but Inter want closer to €60m for the 27-year-old. More figures have been discussed but as yet the proposals are verbal and not what United consider to be formal.

The transfer may follow the same path as Mason Mount, which required four bids by United to Chelsea over the space of 15 days.

The speed of United’s process is guided by getting a sign-off from co-owner Joel Glazer while also balancing a budget influenced by financial fair play considerations.

According to the Athletic, Onana’s personal terms are also still to be fully agreed, although a five-year deal has been mentioned. That is in contrast to Mount, who accepted United’s salary offer in advance of the first bid to Chelsea.

Some of United’s squad have begun training at Carrington, with those not involved in the June internationals reporting for the first session on Thursday by 9am.

David de Gea stayed away as expected, given he is now a free agent. De Gea got married last weekend, tweeting “Life is beautiful” on July 1. Five days later, on the afternoon of Ten Hag’s first pre-season session, De Gea posted an emoji of a juggler, in an apparent cryptic message about his future.

De Gea had agreed terms with United on a new contract before the club pulled the offer and replaced it with a deal on worse terms. Ten Hag was pivotal to the change of opinion over De Gea and pursuit of Onana.

Face-to-face talks are proposed once De Gea is back in England to see if he could envision himself staying at United alongside another No 1, or indeed if there is any hitch to the Onana talks.

In the meantime, Ten Hag has Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton to choose between. Both are back training with United, although Henderson is still to fully rehabilitate after surgery on a thigh injury, so Heaton would be expected in goal for the friendly against Leeds in Oslo on July 12 as things stand.

Should Onana arrive, that would allow Nottingham Forest to move for Henderson. Forest want to sign the 26-year-old permanently after his successful loan spell last season, with a fee predicted at between £20m to £25m. That transfer could happen quickly once there is clarity at United’s end.

United are rebuffing Luton Town’s interest in Heaton at the moment. Heaton, 37, would like to play regular football and is open to moving to the Premier League newcomers but the uncertainty over United’s goalkeepers means Ten Hag wants to keep hold of him for the time being. United play Lyon in Edinburgh on July 19.

If De Gea and Henderson both leave, United may enter the market for a No 2. On the radar is Zion Suzuki, the 20-year-old goalkeeper of Urawa Red Diamonds, but nothing is advanced.

As part of assessing the market, United made contact with Feyenoord over Justin Bijlow but the Dutch champions are very reluctant sellers.
