A second-half brace by Mete Irivia spurred Nkumba University to a 4-0 demolition of Gulu University in a Group E University Football League match on Wednesday in Nkumba.

Gulu University, entering this game with a draw against IUEA in their first match, were decisively beaten. Nkereko Jama initiated the scoring in the 24th minute.

Musuga Isaac further deepened their woes with a 57th-minute goal, coming between Irivia’s two, handing the Northern-based University their second consecutive defeat.

Robert Omony, Gulu University’s head coach, attributed the defeat to his undermanned squad, many starters being unavailable due to injuries.

“It is an unfavorable result, but we won’t draw too many negatives from the defeat; we have several new players, coupled with five injured starters, making it challenging,” Omony shared with the media.

“Imposing our game plan from the outset was problematic, but we take comfort knowing the league is more of a marathon and we will have our home advantage when we face them again.”

Omony also highlighted, “We have a shortage in our midfield, and if you observed, all their goals originated from the midfield due to our injuries, leaving us exposed.”

Nkumba University captain, Ssewankambo John Kennedy, emphasized the importance of the win and a clean sheet, especially after their initial loss to St. Lawrence University.

“This victory, coming after our first-game loss, is crucial as it bolsters the team’s confidence moving forward,” Ssewankambo remarked.

Nkumba University’s head coach, Sulaiman Bbosa, praised his team’s performance but felt more goals could have been netted.

“We corrected some errors after our defeat to St. Lawrence. The scoreline doesn’t fully reflect our dominance, and that’s why I am not entirely satisfied,” Bbosa stated.

With this victory, Nkumba University secure three points after two matches, while Gulu University remains at one point, having drawn with the International University of East Africa.
