The decision to postpone the elections was made in order to allow nominated members comply and be able to take part in the electoral process according to Maureen Mulangira, Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Secretary General, and UPBC Treasurer.
The Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) has postponed its elections, which were scheduled for April 8, 2023, to May 6, 2023.
The decision to postpone the elections was made in order to allow nominated members comply and be able to take part in the electoral process according to Maureen Mulangira, Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Secretary General, and UPBC Treasurer.
It is understood that some of the nominated members, including President Salim Uhuru and Secretary General Jackson Mugwanya, are not in the country due to official government business, which makes it difficult to hold a fair election.
UPBC last held elections in 2018 when Salim Uhuru won the election unopposed.
Uhuru, who is also the mayor of Kampala Central Division, succeeded Bbosa Kiyingi, who had been leading UPBC for 10 years.
Uhuru, who was initially reluctant to seek a second term, could go unopposed in the election, though he is limited to two consecutive terms under the commission's constitution.
He had previously cited his busy schedule as a reason for not seeking a second term, but after being urged by members of the boxing community to stay on, he has decided to run again.
Uhuru had revealed in February 2023, that the body will hold its long-overdue general assembly which also doubles as the elective assembly this month, after a delay of almost four years.
The commission, which is required to hold an AGM promptly each year or no later than six months after the due date, has not held one since 2018, when Uhuru assumed the presidency.
It should be remembered, that Uhuru and his executive were unopposed for their election into office in March 2018.
Aside from the election of new officials, the AGM will also be tasked with filling the position of boxers' representative, which has been vacant since the death of Isaac Zebra Ssenyange in December 2020.
Despite the challenges faced by the UPBC in recent years, Uhuru's tenure has seen some notable achievements, including hosting the Africa Boxing Union Convention in 2018 and having his treasurer Mulangira appointed as secretary general of the ABU.
