Kenyan footballer Nabilai Kibunguchy's national team aspirations get candid advice from coach Firat.

Kenyan footballer Nabilai Kibunguchy’s recent proclamation about his dream of playing for Harambee Stars has garnered attention, particularly from the national team's head coach, Firat.

While Kibunguchy has been showcasing his skills in the United States and has expressed keen interest in representing Kenya, coach Firat has some candid advice for the budding talent.

Currently signed with Orlando City B, which plays in the Major League Soccer Next Pro, Kibunguchy has been making strides in his professional football journey.

From making 30 appearances for Sacramento Republic in 2015-2016 to getting selected as the 18th overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United, he has proved his mettle.

His college achievements also stand as testimony to his prowess. The University of California, Davis, alumni has been lauded with titles like All-Big West Conference First Team, Big West All-Freshman Team, and more.

Despite his growing resume, Kibunguchy is yet to dawn the national colors, something he eagerly wishes for.

“I will play for my national team one day…speaking it into existence,” he confidently posted on social media.

While his determination is commendable, coach Firat feels performance should speak louder than words.

Reacting to Kibunguchy's post, after being questioned about the possibility of including the 25-year-old player in future national assignments, the Turkish gaffer said:

“The door is open for anyone who can help the team. Everyone dreams of playing for the national team, and I won't close the door to anyone.” He added, “However, discussing it on social media is not the way. Instead, demonstrate your performance. If you deserve it, you'll be here.”

Firat's statement reflects his unbiased approach to team selection, and the coach reiterated this in front of the cameras.

“I don't care about which club you play for or how old you are. For me, what's important is what a player does."

Kibunguchy's time with Sacramento Republic was followed by an impressive college football stint, playing from 2016 to 2019 for the University of California, Davis.

During this period, he not only made 52 appearances but also netted 3 goals and contributed 2 assists. 2019 saw him make an appearance in the USL League Two with the San Francisco Glens.

His real breakthrough came when he was selected by Minnesota United in 2021. Though he officially joined the team in April, by May, he was on a loan spell with the USL Championship side Sacramento Republic.

However, following the 2022 season, things took a turn. Minnesota decided against exercising his contract option, and Kibunguchy found himself signing with Orlando City B for the 2023 season.
