The Young Africans’ dream of lifting their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup title went up in smoke after they won 1-0 against USM Alger but lost the title on the away goals rule on Saturday night in Algiers.

The game came to life in the seventh minute when right-back Saadi Radouani fouled Kenneth Musonda in the box, and a penalty was awarded.

Up stepped Djuma Shabani, who calmly slotted home to give the visitors the lead and level the aggregate score at 2-2.

Nabi Nasreddine's charges then held on to end the first half with the lead, but after recess, USM Alger applied all tactics to ensure they kept their away goals advantage intact.

The game was briefly stopped thrice due to flares lit by the ultras, covering the stadium with smoke.

USM Alger players also deployed time-wasting antics, rolling on the ground unnecessarily and, in the end, interrupting the flow of the game.

The hosts were able to see out the game and become the first-ever Algerian side to win the CAF Confederation Cup.

Young Africans’ goalkeeper Djigui Diara was named the man of the match after his impressive performance that saw him make great saves including a penalty save in the 56th minute to keep his side in the game.
