Los Che hosted last season's champions at the Mestalla as they look to move further away from the drop. The hosts put up a gutsy performance as they picked up their first victory against Real Madrid since 2020.

How it happened

The hosts have enjoyed a turnaround in their season and were coming off three wins and a draw in their last five coming into this game.

The visitors, on the other hand, lost the league to their biggest rivals by a considerable margin and were dumped out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion.

Valencia started with a pop and immediately had chances at goal against Thibaut Courtois, but did not manage to beat the big Belgian. Carlo Ancelotti's men slowly found their footing and played their way into the game, exposing their rivals on occasions, but the game remained scoreless.

The young bat, Diego Lopez, finally broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute after a beautiful strike.

Real Madrid reacted, bringing on Rodrygo at halftime to increase the bodies they had in offence, and went on to lead a second-half dominance.

The 14-time Champions League winners could not find an equaliser, and lost Vinicius to a straight red card in the 97th minute due to violent conduct.

The win takes Valencia five points above the drop zone, while Real Madrid stay third, behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
