Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has opened up about how he plans to elevate the standards of Kenyan football thanks to his experience and networks.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has expressed his desire to help lift the standards of Kenyan football.

Wanyama is one of Kenya’s biggest football exports having made history as the first player to feature in the English Premier League following his stints at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

As he enters the latter years of his career, Wanyama is keen to leave a legacy and believes he can help lift the standards of Kenyan football thanks to his vast experience and networks.

"I have always wanted to use my position to help others," Wanyama told SportsBoom. "Football has opened doors for me, and I feel a responsibility to give back. I’ve been involved in community projects, youth development, and supporting local talents. My aim is to see more Kenyan players succeed on the global stage."

Wanyama is, however, saddened that Kenya’s infrastructure has not improved over the years and feels this is the main reason the country’s football has been left behind.

"I think there’s a lot of untapped talent in Kenya. The infrastructure may not always be ideal, but the passion is there,” he added.

"I would love to be more involved in the development of football at all levels, and if that means working with the federation or clubs, I’m ready to contribute,” said Wanyama, expressing an interest to collaborate with the new Football Kenya Federation office led by president Hussein Mohammed.

"The biggest issue has always been the lack of proper structures, facilities, and investment in grassroots football. If we can fix these things, the future of Kenyan football can be very bright."

Wanyama is currently searching for a new club after ending his near-five-year stay at MLS club CF Montreal last month but he is not just about to hang his boots yet. "Football is my life, and as long as I’m fit and able, I will keep going," he said.
