‘The Lion’ benefited greatly from Simba’s moment of confusion in the Tanzanian league clash as he started his reign with a point after his opponents scored a classic own goal.

Robert Matano secured a morale-boosting draw in his first match as coach of Tanzanian side Fountain Gate but it came with fortune.

Matano led Fountain Gate out for the first time, as his team hosted giants and leaders Simba, and knew it would be a difficult afternoon but ended up with a 1-1 draw thanks to a classic own goal from Simba.

With champions Yanga having moved two points ahead earlier in the day, Simba knew that only a win would return them to the summit, but they shot themselves in the foot, giving “The Lion” from Kenya a point in his first match in charge of Fountain Gate.

Simba went ahead in the 57th minute when Jean Charles Ahoua capitalised on a quick free-kick and passed to Ladaki Chasambi who made his way into the box before squaring to Leonel Ateba.

Ateba fired a powerful shot past Fountain Gate goalkeeper John Noble to give Fadlu Davids’ men a deserved lead and they took control of the match until disaster struck 15 minutes from time.

Chasambi attempted to play a pass back to his goalkeeper Moussa Camara but the ball eluded the custodian and went straight into the net, leaving the player with his hand in his arms and Simba stunned.

After the goal, Fountain Gate sensed an opportunity to claim a rare point and their goalkeeper Noble started time-wasting tactics to slow the game down, which infuriated Simba players.

Having already received a yellow card, Noble did not stop his antics and he was sent off later in the contest after a second yellow, forcing midfielder Hashimu Omary to take over goalkeeping duties for the rest of the match as Matano had used all his substitutes.

The draw saw Fountain Gate remain sixth on the table on 21 points but Simba slipped to second on the log with 44 points, one behind bitter rivals Yanga, having been at the summit for most of the season.
