The Kenyan champions secured a hard-fought victory over Zanzibar's New Generation FC in Kampala.

Four-time Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League champions Vihiga Queens kicked off their 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zone Qualifiers with a resounding 3-1 victory over New Generation of Zanzibar on Sunday.

It was an encouraging start for Queens as the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers marched into the MTN Omondi Stadium in Kampala shouldering the hopes of a second appearance in the continental competition.

New Generation showcased very little stage fright during the opening stages of the game and took the game to the Kenyan champions. On the other hand, Vihiga Queens attempted to get into the game by stringing fluid passes together.

While occupying the space on the edge of their area, New Generation defended with aggression in looking to keep Vihiga at an arm’s length.

As the 15th minute rolled on, Vihiga grew in confidence and ventured forward with purpose. In creating goal-scoring opportunities from wide areas of the pitch, New Generation were made to work hard in neutralizing the Vihiga attacks.

Merclyne Wayodi often troubled the New Generation left-back with her pace and trickery, as she proved to be the creator in chief for Vihiga throughout the first half.

With 20 minutes on the clock, New Generation looked dangerous going forward and they were finally rewarded with a well-taken finish by Hemed Amina.

Vihiga managed to manufacture numerous goalscoring chances after the half-hour mark, as Phoebe Owiti often came inches away from giving her side the equaliser.

However, Charles Okere’s side managed to level matters in the 38th minute when Winnie Babirye sent a left-footed effort into the back of the net, 1-1.

Under immense pressure, New Generation were reduced to the last ditch defending toward the end of the first half while Vihiga attacked with vigor.

Vihiga started the second half full of attacking intent and they were rewarded in the 51st minute when Maurine Achieng laid on a great pass for the run of Ruth Khasoha, who placed a low shot beyond the reach of Faith Marende’s right hand for 2-1.

Elizabeth Mupoma nearly put New Generation level in the 74th minute but saw her low drive from a tight angle turned away by Ruth Aturo.

Vihiga stretched their lead in the 80th minute from a penalty that was converted by defender Martha Amunyolet from a foul on Ugandan international Amita Namattah.

Queens will return to action on Wednesday to face Rwanda’s AS Kigali also in Kampala, in the afternoon kickoff of the day.
