Vipers SC put five past Express FC, with the visitors responding twice in an entertaining Tuesday Uganda Premier League bout at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
However, the former’s head coach Alex Isabirye is not getting lifted off his seat just yet; conceding the goal margin was a bit flattering.
While the Venoms got two quick-fire goals in the first half, it was tight when the guests pulled one back, and even faster at 3-2 in the second half as the latter pushed for a leveller.
That was before the hosts later peeled away in the game's final minutes, eventually looking comfortable, courtesy of substitute Cromwel Rwothomio’s late brace.
The others came through Milton Karisa, Bright Anukani and Yunus Sentamu, while Express scored through Joseph Akandanwaho and Marvin Oshaba.
“For someone who didn’t watch the game today and only saw the score 5-2, you may think it was easy for us, but it was far from that,” Isabirye noted in the post-match press conference.
“It was one of the hardest games this season. It gets complicated when you lead by three and the opponent responds with two goals; it’s not easy. But, I’ve been a coach for 10-11 years, and I know these situations," he added.
Isabirye showered Rwothomio in praise, hailing his consistent hard work, commitment and discipline.
“I am delighted with Cromwel; it (goal) was coming. He’s been coming on a substitute and should have scored on many other occasions.”
“He must continue working hard, stay focused, and be one of the most disciplined players here. I am sure he will keep doing a good job for us,” Isabirye said.
The result maintained Vipers’ hold on the summit via a superior goal difference over KCCA FC and SC Villa, who all have 49 points.
