Victor Wanyama has returned to pre-season training with his MSL side CF Montreal as he looks forward to better tidings under a new coach after a tough end to his 2023 campaign.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has started preparations for the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season which will kick off in February after reporting back for pre-season with CF Montreal on Friday.

Wanyama joined the rest of the squad as they returned to work with new coach Laurent Courtois meeting the squad for the first time since his appointment early this week.

The Kenya international will also be hoping for a change in fortunes under Courtois as he had fallen out of favour with his predecessor Hernan Losada who rarely selected him in the final months of last season.

The midfielder started just one game since mid-July and his bit-part role led to a furious bust-up with Losada when he sought answers over his limited playing time.

Wanyama’s place in midfield was taken by 19-year-old academy graduate Nathan Saliba and it remains to be seen if Courtois will keep trust in the youngster given he was hired primarily due to his work with youth at Columbus Crew 2.

That would spell doom for Wanyama who is one of the most experienced players in the squad at CF Montreal.

The players started their schedule with medical and physical testing on Friday and it will be followed up with training after which four pre-season games against Minnesota United (January 27), Atlanta United (February 7), Colorado Rapids (February 10), and Tampa Bay Rowdies on February 17.

Montreal will kick off their 2024 MLS season with an away clash against Orlando City on February 24 with the team’s home opener taking place at Stade Saputo on April 13 against FC Cincinnati.

Courtois has a big job on his hands after Losada was sacked for finishing the 2023 season trophyless while also missing out on the MLS playoffs.
