The Kenyan international put in a solid display as the Canadian side returned to winning ways in the league
Former Harambee Stars Victor Wanyama has expressed his delight at being on the winning side after FC Montreal returned to winning ways in the MLS following a 1-0 victory over Inter Miami on Sunday morning.
Captain Wanyama led from the front with another dominant performance in central midfield as the two MSL strugglers faced off at a sold-out Saputo Stadium.
Chinonso Offor scored the lone goal after he managed to deflect an Ariel Lassiter cross in the 53rd minute with Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois proving to be a wall as he denied Inter Miami on a number of occasions.
CF Montreal have made it a habit of starting slow, whether at home or on the road, but Sunday was completely different as they started quickly, dominating possession, while creating chances in the first 15 minutes.
They, however, had to wait until after halftime to break the deadlock as Lassiter brought in a good cross and Offor dived towards the ball. It went off his foot and into the net for the 1-0 lead.
“Three vital points earned.. Come on you CF Montreal,” Wanyama said via a social media post after the match.
From there, the visitors pushed as CF Montreal sat back in a low block and let Inter Miami come at them but a solid performance from Sirois secured them the win.
Victory sees Montreal end their two-game losing streak in the league and they are now ninth on the 15-team table on 18 points while Inter Miami are bottom, three points adrift.
Montreal had beaten Forge FC 2-0 in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship on Wednesday as they set up a final clash with Vancouver Whitecaps next month.
