The former Kenya captain played a crucial role for the struggling Canadian side who recorded just their second win of the season
Victor Wanyama played a key role as FC Montreal ended their poor run of form in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) with a 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls on Sunday morning.
The former Harambee Stars captain started in midfield as Montreal played with a back three and dictated proceedings against the struggling three-time time champions.
Montreal went ahead in the 25th minute thanks to an own-goal when New York defender Andres Reyes slotted in his own net following pressure on the visitors’ goal and Wanyama almost grabbed a second shortly after.
A corner was whipped in the box and with New York defenders missing it, Wanyama got on the end of it with a lovely flick but goalkeeper Carlos Coronel was on hand to make a save.
Montreal were then forced to play with 10 men after Ilias Iliadis received a red card in the 65th minute but the Canadian side were undeterred as they continued to launch attacks on the New York goal.
They got their reward deep in time added on, when a swift counter attacking move saw Mathieu Choiniere score the second to hand Montreal just their second win of the season from eight games.
It was also the second game in which Montreal had scored in, the last being against Philadelphia Union on March 8, when they recorded their first win of the season but they still remain bottom of the 15-team table on six points, having scored just five goals while conceding 17.
The win ensured Montreal avoided joining DC United (2010) and Toronto (2012) as the only teams to lose seven of its first eight matches and will be hoping to build on it when they travel to Sporting KC next Saturday.
