The former Harambee Stars captain was a second-half substitute as the MLS side won on penalties against the Mexican club.

Victor Wanyama was a second-half substitute as CF Montreal beat Mexican club Pumas UNAM in a Leagues Cup match at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal on Sunday morning.

The game ended 2-2 in regulation time and had to be settled on post-match penalties which Montreal won 4-2.

As per Leagues Cup rules, winning in regulation yields three points while a win on penalties only comes with two, securing an advantage to qualify for the Round of 32 of the joint US and Mexican leagues tournament.

For the second straight game, Wanyama had to settle for a place on the bench as Hernan Losada’s men took a 2-0 first-half lead before a dramatic last-minute comeback from Pumas UNAM-tied the match.

Bryce Duke and Mathieu Choiniere were the first-half goal scorers for Montreal, while Gabriel Fernandez and Emanuel Montejano scored for the Mexican side.

Wanyama was delighted to be on the winning side yet again as Montreal made it back-to-back victories following last weekend's 2-0 victory over Charlotte.

“An important win. We go again on Wednesday,” Wanyama posted on his Facebook page.

Losada was also thrilled to see his charges respond positively on the pitch as they have now scored in two straight games, having failed to do so in their previous three games.

“I’m very happy with the result and the way we played tonight, especially for the first hour. This is going to give us a lot of confidence going forward,” Losada said, as per Canadian outlet National Post.

“The atmosphere tonight was incredible, this felt like a real Cup tie and the fans of both teams were involved for the entire match.”

Both teams will play their final match of the Group Stage against DC United with Montreal set to clash with Wayne Rooney’s side on Wednesday, while Pumas play them next Saturday.
