The Brentford loanee’s instant impact in Bavaria was underscored by his first-rate assist against St. Pauli.
Frank Onyeka had a debut to remember for Augsburg in Sunday’s 3-1 Bundesliga success over St. Pauli at WWK Arena.
Augsburg vs St. Pauli
All four goals were scored after half-time, with Marius Wolf scoring the game’s opening strike in minute 47 before further strikes from Phillip Tietz — assisted by Onyeka — and Yusuf Kabadayi either side of Carlo Boukhalfa’s effort for the visitors sealed Augsburg’s first league victory of the 2024-25 season.
Onyeka’s excellent assist
Onyeka, making his first appearance since joining Jess Thorup’s men from Premier League side Brentford for the season, assisted Tietz in the 66th minute to double the home side’s advantage.
After receiving Samuel Essende’s pass on a fast break, the Nigerian drove forward in possession and delivered a pinpoint cross from the right half-space — à la Man City star Kevin De Bruyne — that needed a one-touch left-footed finish.
Apart from his assist, Onyeka also fashioned another opportunity deemed a clear-cut chance, won nine of his 11 duels, including a 100% success rate in three aerial tussles, and attempted five tackles.
Despite failing to convert an 11th-minute opportunity categorised as a big chance, the Brentford loanee’s maiden Bundesliga performance was commendable.
What comes next?
Onyeka and his Augsburg teammates seek their second top-flight success on Friday, September 20, when they host Mainz at WWK Arena.
