This Chelsea player is already being hailed as a future star and likened to Barcelona's Lamine Yamal.

Sporting teenager Geovany Quenda has been compared to Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal by Tiago Teixeira.

Teixeira, Sporting's assistant manager, recently spoke effusively about the 17-year-old wide attacker, who joins Chelsea in the summer of 2026 after both clubs agreed to a £40million ($51.8m) deal for the teenager, who has made fewer than 30 league. appearances for the Lisbon giants.

Why is Quenda highly rated?

Born in Guinea-Bissau in 2007, Quenda caused excitement in Portuguese football from a young age. His two-footedness, dribbling, aggressive ball-carrying, composure and intelligence beyond his years are notable features of the young player.

Benfica recognised his talent, snapping him up from SF Damaiense in 2017. He then joined Benfica's rivals Sporting in 2019.

Teixeira, Sporting's then-U-23 coach was impressed with Quenda's dribbling, physicality and decision-making, all standout characteristics in one solo goal scored for Portugal's U-17 side in 2023.

Teixeira believes Quenda possesses the qualities to excel in various attacking positions. His former youth coach has even likened the teenager to Yamal, Barcelona and Spain's menacing 17-year-old star.

“I see similarities with Lamine Yamal,” Teixeira told The Athletic. “Both of them started playing senior football at 16, 17.

“Yamal is already playing for Spain but Quenda has just been called up by Portugal for the first time and I’m certain he’s going to be a regular in the national team for years to come, and a star of the Champions League.

“He will get better with age and keep growing in confidence. He has everything he needs.”

What next for Quenda?

Although he joins Premier League club Chelsea in 2026, Quenda remains at Sporting for another 15 months, striving to hone his craft and improve his grasp of the language before swapping Lisbon for London.

The teenager could feature for the 27th time in the Primeira Liga against Estrela on Saturday, bringing his total to 45 appearances this term.
