Karim Watambala and Bright Anukani's second-half goals were enough to have the defending champions win 2-0 and pick three valuable points on enemy territory.

The Venoms had drawn to Mbarara City FC (0-0) and record holders SC Villa (1-1) in the last two games but have triumphed past a tricky opponent.

On the evening in Kavumba, it was a relatively dull opening half, with no serious attacking intent or threat from either side.

Despite bossing possession, Vipers were limited to half chances, with the first sight of goal coming in the 12th minute, as Bright Stars' goalkeeper Derrick Were was forced to parry a Watambala freekick.

A minute after the half-hour mark, the hosts had their maiden shot on target through Noordin Bunjo, but Vipers' custodian Jack Komakech was equal to the challenge.

The Venoms then missed a promising chance in the 38th minute as Yunus Sentamu headed wide a cross from Watambala.

The second half's start was the opposite as Vipers netted within four minutes through Watambala's shot off a deflection from Andy Kyambadde.

Four minutes later, the Venoms added a second with Anukani headed in an Abdu Lumala cross after brilliant build-up play from Erick Kambale.

In the 77th minute, Vipers missed a glorious opportunity to make it three as substitute Mohamed Salem struck over the bar in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.

In a bid to pull back one, the hosts threatened through substitute Sam Ssenyonjo in the 81st minute, but his goal-bound effort was met with an excellent Komakech save.

The guests eventually had enough in the tank to pull off three points and a clean-sheet.

Vipers, who have ascended to fourth on the table with 11 points, will hope to make it two wins on the bounce in their next match against Wakiso Giants FC at the St Mary's Stadium, Kitende next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, on the same day, 13th-placed Bright Stars will visit Mbarara City FC at Kakyeka Stadium.
