Marumo Gallants, home to Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Ismael Watenga continued their fight to avoid relegation with a 3-1 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night in the Dstv Premiership.

The win was Gallants’ third in five games and temporarily lifted the side out of danger to 14th on 27 points, one ahead of 15th-placed Chippa United and three ahead of bottom-placed Maritzburg United.

Interestingly, Marumo, who are in their debut season of the CAF Confederations Cup, are in the quarter-finals for the first time and will face Algeria’s USM Algers. Watenga was an unused substitute on Wednesday night.

Similarly, former Cranes captain Dennis Onyango was an unused substitute as his Mamelodi Sundowns side played out a 1-1 draw away to Golden Arrows on Wednesday night.

Masandawana, who have already been crowned Dstv Premiership champions for the sixth straight time, are now winless in their last three league outings, scoring only one goal.

The Brazilians will be hoping to break their own league points record of finishing with 74 points if they win their remaining four games.

Sundowns set a club record of finishing on 71 points in the 2015/16 season under Pitso Mosimane.
