One of Mikel Arteta’s players has highlighted qualities that make the Gunners a potential Champions League contender.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has shared his thoughts on the club's Champions League ambitions, expressing a strong belief in their potential to conquer Europe's elite competition.
What Merino said about Arsenal’s Champions League prospects
The summer signing from Real Sociedad acknowledged the significance of winning the Champions League for a club of Arsenal's stature and the deep-rooted desire for European glory among players and fans alike.
The Spaniard declared that the team possess the foundational elements necessary for success, highlighting the quality of the squad, the winning mentality instilled by manager Mikel Arteta, and the collective determination to achieve greatness.
“Knowing what this club is about and how big winning trophies is in general, winning the Champions League here would be amazing,” Merino told the press on Monday. “Obviously, there is still a long way to go to achieve that.
“But I think we have the basics, we have the players, we have the mentality and that has to be the ultimate goal so hopefully we can start by winning tomorrow and keep on growing and building up for when the stakes are the final, hopefully.”
What next for Arsenal?
Arsenal return to Champions League action on Tuesday, aiming to build on their October 1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain and secure back-to-back wins when they host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium.
