What Tuchel said
)
Tuchel expressed his belief that England's players were more concerned with avoiding elimination than with actively pursuing the tournament win.
He highlighted a lack of identity, clarity and rhythm in the team's play, along with a stifling of player freedom and expression.
“They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament, in my observation, than having the excitement and hunger to win it,” Tuchel said in an interview with ITV released on Thursday.
When asked what England lacked, Tuchel said: “The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns, the freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger.”

Speaking to the media on Thursday, the former Chelsea boss expatiated on those remarks.
“Maybe another way to put it, what I felt watching the Euros, I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players,” said Tuchel.
“They were more afraid. They were playing to not lose and not to have even more pressure added in the home country, (rather) than the excitement to make something special happen. We need to turn this around.”
Tuchel pledged to address these issues as he begins his tenure, aiming to instill a more positive and attacking mindset within the squad.
He emphasised the need for players to embrace their roles and play with discipline, while also fostering better connections on the pitch.
“I think we have to make sure that when we play now that everyone knows his role on the field, also accepts his role and plays discipline in his role,” continued the Three Lions boss. “But we need to bond a little bit better, we need to find more rhythm and a little bit better connections on the field.”

Despite their promise, England have often flattered to deceive at major tournaments, though Gareth Southgate got the team into the latter stages of said competitions, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and title matches at consecutive European Championships.
