Mikel Arteta reveals the story of his wife he used in motivating Kai Havertz.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has revealed a bizarre reference he used to motivate struggling Kai Havertz.

The German forward joined Arsenal from Chelsea this summer for a reported €75 million fee but has struggled with form since joining the Gunners, failing to score or assist in five games.

The club's coach, Arteta, still backs his big-money signing, however, and has made an attempt to motivate him using a personal story.

What Arteta said

Arsenal were 3-1 winners today against one of their bitter rivals, Manchester United, but once again, Havertz failed to directly influence the scoresheet.

Speaking after the game, Arteta, acknowledging the forward's slump, revealed the details of what he had said to him on his form.

The Spaniard recalled a story of himself and his wife, Lorena Bernal, telling Havertz of the effort it took for him to woo her.

He told the forward that things could be tough at the beginning but assured that, in the end, they would become easier.

“I said to Havertz: things are hard at the beginning,” Arteta said, per Fabrizio Romano.

“When I met my wife, at the beginning, it was hard to conquer her. It was hard; I had to try and message her, and go, and go.”

“And at the end, when she says Yes, we can be together, it’s beautiful”.

Members of the Arsenal squad will now go to their various national teams for the coming international break. They will next be in action for the Gunners away at Everton on September 17th.
