FKFPL Where Gor Mahia and Tusker can win or lose FKFPL title as season enters homestretch

The two teams are engaged in a fascinating contest but their next seven matches will decide the destiny of the coveted league crown

Tusker FC and Gor Mahia are set for a tough run-in that will see them come up against tough opposition as both bid to claim the 2022-2023 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title.

The Brewers won their match in hand over Gor 2-0 courtesy of goals from Lawrence Luvanda and Eric Otieno, a result which took them to the summit of the log and a point ahead of K'Ogalo.

Gor handed Tusker a major advantage when they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Posta Rangers last weekend.

With Gor on 53 points and Tusker on 54, Robert Matano’s men will fancy their chances of retaining the title they won back in 2021 after the 2022 season was annulled.

Gor, on the other hand, are hungry for the title after watching Tusker end their dominance with the former facing Kenya Police FC next, a tough match, given the Law Enforcers are fifth on the table, and run them close when they last met in February before K’Ogalo won 2-1.

Johnathan McKinstry’s men then have three straight matches that appear easy on paper against FC Talanta, Mathare United, and Wazito FC. However, while all three are fighting to avoid relegation, Gor will not find it easy and do not need to look far as Mathare are the last team to hand them a league defeat when they won 2-1 in March.

It, therefore, means K’Ogalo have to be wary of lightning striking twice as the Slum Boys have proved to be somewhat of a bogey team given the 19-time champions have failed to beat them in six of their last 10 matches.

Gor’s two matches thereafter will further test their title credentials as they come up against bitter rivals AFC Leopards and Tusker, perhaps where the title will be won or lost.

While Gor have dominated the ‘Mashemeji’ derby, the last five meetings present a different scenario as there have been four draws, with K’Ogalo winning just once over that period, which makes it a tricky run-in for the Green Army.

Meetings against Tusker have also proved tough for Gor as in their last 10 meetings, they have produced four wins for the Brewers plus three draws, K’Ogalo winning thrice, including this season’s encounter, a 2-1 victory in February. Gor will then end their season with unpredictable Ulinzi Stars who always blow hot and cold.

Meanwhile, Tusker have two tough games after Wazito, coming up against third and fourth-placed Nzoia Sugar and KCB respectively, who are both tied on 48 points and still with a mathematical chance of winning the title if the top two drop off.

Tusker’s last meeting with Nzoia ended in a barren stalemate while they beat KCB 2-1 but with both teams unbeaten in their last five matches, it would not be a surprise if either or both hold or upset Matano’s men.

The holders then have Nairobi City Stars, Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks for company before the season-defining meeting with Gor in the penultimate round of fixtures. City Stars, Homeboyz, and Sharks may be struggling but surprises cannot be ruled out.

Tusker will end the season with a meeting against Wazito, who would have been relegated by then perhaps, and if not, then it could tough given they will be fighting for their lives.
