Who is Mika Biereth? 8 things you need to know about the former Arsenal striker tearing apart Ligue 1 for Monaco

1. Arsenal sold Mika Biereth for just £4 million

Arsenal let Biereth go for £4 million to Sturm Graz last summer, believing they had made a smart trading decision while securing a sizeable sell-on clause.

At the time, he wasn’t seen as a fit for Mikel Arteta’s system. But with Arsenal now struggling for options up front due to injuries, some fans are questioning whether they should have held onto the young striker.

2. Biereth’s ‘short-term memory’ won him Monaco contract

Biereth’s move to Monaco was no fluke. The club combined scouting and data analysis to pinpoint him as one of the most effective forwards in Europe.

After careful negotiation, they secured his signature from Austrian side Sturm Graz in January for a €15 million package.  According to The Athletic, their belief in him was sealed after an exchange in which they asked how he reacts to missing a big chance.

His reply? "I have the worst short-term memory in the world." That mentality convinced Monaco he was the right man to replace the injured Folarin Balogun.

3. Mika Biereth could play for four different countries

Biereth has represented Denmark at the U21 level but is also eligible to play for England, Germany, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. With his rapid rise, he is expected to earn a senior call-up in the upcoming international break—but which nation will he choose?

Biereth’s rise from Arsenal’s academy to Ligue 1’s hottest striker is a testament to his resilience, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of improvement. With Monaco reaping the rewards of their investment, the question now is just how high his ceiling truly is.

4. Biereth’s rapid Monaco start equalled 70-year record

Biereth has hit the ground running in France, netting three hat-tricks in February alone—making him the first player in 70 years to score three trebles in his first seven Ligue 1 games.

His ability to bounce back from missed chances and his composure in front of goal have made him an instant fan favorite.

5. Mika Biereth took an unconventional path to the top

Unlike many Premier League prospects who stay within the English system, Biereth has embraced different leagues and cultures. Born in London to a Danish-German father and a Bosnian mother, he left Arsenal to seek first-team football. Loans to RKC Waalwijk, Motherwell, and eventually Sturm Graz helped him develop into a top-level forward.

6. Mika Biereth was  instrumental in ending Red Bull Salzburg’s Austrian dominance

Before joining Monaco, Biereth played a pivotal role in Sturm Graz’s league and cup double, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

His performances in Austria—including goals against Girona and Lille in European competition—showed he was ready for a bigger stage.

7. Mika Biereth could form a deadly partnership with fellow ex-Gunner Folarin Balogun

Monaco initially signed Biereth to fill in for Balogun after his shoulder injury, but there’s growing anticipation that the two former Arsenal strikers could lead the line together.

Biereth’s natural ability to time his runs and play off the last defender could complement Balogun’s skill set, making Monaco’s attack even more formidable.

Balogun’s ability to play as a left inside forward could also allow Monaco boss Adi Hutter to accommodate both forwards.

8. Mika Biereth is a hybrid of Harry Kane & Erling Haaland

Biereth has drawn comparisons to Jamie Vardy for his ability to exploit defensive gaps, but when asked about his playing style, he jokingly described himself as "a s**t Haaland and a s**t Harry Kane—a hybrid of them at a much worse level."

While self-deprecating, his recent performances suggest he’s closing the gap faster than anyone expected.
