Awoniyi’s mate hints at cheating
The post, which has since been deleted, reignited debates over contentious refereeing decisions and raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
The controversy stemmed from an Instagram repost by Gibbs-White, featuring an image from Sportsbible juxtaposing Casemiro's last-gasp winner for United against Virgil van Dijk's disallowed effort for Liverpool in Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.
Intriguingly, both games were officiated by referee Chris Kavanagh, leading to murmurs of discontent and accusations of biased officiating according to a report from the Sun.
In the encounter between Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, it was Casemiro who emerged as the hero with a dramatic 89th-minute header off a Bruno Fernandes free-kick, securing victory for the Red Devils.
However, Gibbs-White's social media post hinted at a sense of injustice, suggesting that his team had been unfairly treated by the officials, who he believes should have ruled out the goal for offside.
The deleted post fuels speculation of refereeing inconsistencies and appears to have sparked heated debates among fans on social media platforms.
While Gibbs-White's post may have been swiftly removed from his Instagram feed, its impact has been felt across platforms, reigniting discussions on the role of officiating in crucial matches and prompting further scrutiny of refereeing decisions in high-stakes encounters.
Nigeria’s Awoniyi featured from start to finish against the Red Devils and attempted eight shots, with two on target while three were blocked.
