Former Brazil star Robinho faces jail in Brazil after a historic judgment amidst a high-profile legal battle and international attention.

Former Brazil and Manchester City winger Robinho will begin a nine-year jail sentence in his native Brazil marking a significant turning point in a legal saga that has captured global attention.

This development comes after Italy's judicial system found him guilty in 2017 of participating in a gang rape.

The case reached its apex this Wednesday when Brazil's Superior Court of Justice (BSCJ) rendered a historic judgment, acquiescing to Italy's 2022 extradition request for the 40-year-old footballer.

Robson de Souza, known worldwide by his moniker Robinho, was implicated alongside five other men in the sexual assault of an Albanian woman within the confines of an Italian nightclub in January 2013.

Despite his consistent declarations of innocence and having spent the last seven years in Brazil, the Supreme Court in Rome dismissed his final appeal in January 2022, effectively upholding his conviction.

The ruling has ignited a maelstrom of legal and public discourse, particularly since Robinho will remain at liberty while he potentially appeals the decision, his lawyers have indicated.

Throughout his illustrious career, Robinho has donned the Brazil national team jersey 100 times, a testament to his once-sterling reputation on the international stage.

At the time of the incident, he was an AC Milan player, having previously showcased his talents at Manchester City and Real Madrid, among other clubs.

In a recent conversation with a Brazilian network, Robinho attempted to sway public opinion by insisting that the sexual encounter was consensual.

"I never denied [the encounter]. I could have denied it because my DNA was not there, but I'm not a liar," he said as per DW.

This claim comes amidst a backdrop of significant achievements in his career, including winning two La Liga titles during his tenure at Real Madrid and moving to Manchester City in 2008 for a then-record £32.5m transfer fee.

His transfer coincided with Sheikh Mansour's acquisition of the Premier League club, highlighting the high expectations placed on him at the time.

After his stint with Manchester City, Robinho's career took him to AC Milan, where he spent five years before venturing to China with Guangzhou Evergrande and eventually returning to Brazil to play for Atletico Mineiro.
