The Reds secured a slim victory at Anfield to heat up the race for the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp sounded rather pessimistic over Liverpool’s chances of beating Manchester United to a Premier League top-four finish.

After a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brentford at Anfield on Saturday, the Reds moved one point behind the Red Devils, who have two games in hand.

"Six games ago, nobody would have thought we would be here. We cannot do more than win football games. If Manchester United play their games the way they want, they will be seven points away, and that will be really difficult to catch," Klopp told BBC Sport.

"We have to make sure we finish the situation in the best possible way."

The Reds have been in fine form and have collected 19 points from a possible 21, with Trent Alexander-Arnold moving into a hybrid midfield role.

They have a mathematical chance of claiming a Champions League place, although Brighton, in seventh place, will move ahead of them if they win their three games in hand.

"Imagine if [Man Utd slipped up]," continued Klopp. "I don't think they will, but imagine if they did and we weren't there. We would really regret that. If United win their two games in hand, then they are seven points away, and it's pretty much done.

"We know that. Brighton, if they win all their games in hand, which is absolutely possible, they are above us. It's an interesting period. We have to make sure we keep the teams behind us, behind us because they are coming.

"Nothing is decided, and that's good."

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah registered another record with his 13th minute goal, which brought him level with Steven Gerrard on 186 goals as Liverpool's joint fifth-highest goalscorer.

"I can't see him stopping because that's just his nature," Klopp said about the Egyptian. As an offensive player, you need to have this desire to score goals.

"A lot of people forget how many goals he sets up. He's very often involved in the goals we score, whether with the last pass, the challenge he wins back, or with his own finish.

"It makes him really special, but we all know. When he sits in a studio in a few years in a studio and works as a pundit, everybody will then finally know how good he was when we were all watching him."

This is the third successive season that Mohamed Salah has scored at least 30 goals in all competitions, and indeed his fourth time in six seasons overall.
